Give a Little Piece of your Heart
-
This week, Jamaican-born jewelry artist Anna Ruth Henriques announced the release of her latest piece, a “Mini Heart” pendant which quite literally takes the form of a mini human heart. The stunningly unique piece, crafted from sterling silver, 18-karat gold and small inset rubies, is aimed at raising funds for the charity Doctors Without Borders, and is part of a campaign aptly named “Give a Little Piece of your Heart”.Henriques revealed in a recent interview that Doctors Without Borders is a charity in which she has held a prolonged interest, originating from childhood experiences growing up in Jamaica. Henriques’ great uncle would regularly regale her with stories of his work as a surgeon at Jamaica’s Kingston Public Hospital. These would typically convey to Henriques scenes of people desperately in need of care, left in corridors, without access to modern medical equipment and procedures. Her passive interest in these stories was only reaffirmed over the years as her great uncle invited interns over from developed countries, who would regularly visit Henrique’s home and discuss their experiences with her.
Over the years, Henriques has come to appreciate what a fantastic gift these doctors brought with them to Jamaica, and the Give A Little Piece of Your Heart campaign is Henriques’ contribution to improving the access of the world’s poorest nations to medical care. In this case, the profits go directly to Doctors Without Borders, an international humanitarian organization which sends doctors and other medical professionals to areas of need in over 60 countries.
Henriques’ designs typically follow a natural, organic theme, and this Mini Heart piece is no exception. Modeled after the human heart, made from only the finest metals and stones, and attached with an organic cotton cord, the piece is pure quality. The piece retails at $395, and is available exclusively from Barney’s New York or is available online from http://www.givealittlepieceofyourheart.com.
